1984 - Phenomena - Phenomena

Supergroups have been common in the realm of hard rock for decades -- some have worked wonders (Cream), while some, well, stunk (too many to mention). One of the more obscure ones to surface was the '80s outfit Phenomena, who debuted in 1985 with a self-titled release, and featured contributions from the likes of Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple), Don Airey (Ozzy Osbourne), and a trio of ex-Whitesnake members -- Mel Galley, Neil Murray, and Cozy Powell. Those expecting tough, rip-roaring heavy metal may be a bit disappointed by the album (which features a cover shot of a young girl quite reminiscent of Linda Blair circa The Exorcist). Keep in mind -- the mid-'80s was the era of polished, keyboard-heavy, melodic rock, and Phenomena fit in with the musical climate, especially on such tracks as the album-opening "Kiss of Fire" and "Still the Night." If GTR could have scored a hit or two around this time, with the right push, there's no reason why Phenomena couldn't have also. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide.

1992 - Brian May - Back To The Light

Back To The Light, Brian's long-awaited debut solo album, was released in September 1992, in conjunction with Too Much Love Will Kill You; both hit the Top Ten in their respective charts, with the album reaching #6 and the single peaking at #5. (In the United States, the album even charted at #159, with a bonus track of Driven By You, with Cozy Powell on drums and Neil Murray on bass.) Two further singles – the title track, #19 UK, and Resurrection, #33 – were extracted from the album, though the main point of interest was Brian's world tour, the first time he had gone out as a solo artist. The Brian May Band – Brian on vocals and guitars, Cozy Powell on drums, Neil Murray on bass, Spike Edney on keyboards, Mike Caswell on guitars, and Maggie Ryder, Miriam Stockley, and Chris Thompson on backing vocals – debuted on November 1, 1992, in Buenos Aires, with a five-date tour of South America. By the time the band wound its way to North America in February, Caswell, Ryder, Stockley, and Thompson were replaced by Jamie Moses on guitars and Cathy Porter and Shelley Preston on backing vocals, which would be the lineup that would remain steady for the remainder of the year.

1993 - Brian May - Live At The Brixton Academy

Live at the Brixton Academy is a recording of The Brian May Band's first show in London on June 15 1993. The album is an almost complete and unedited version of the concert. Their performance of John Lennon's "God (The Dream Is Over)" was not included on the album due to copyright issues. Keyboard player Spike Edney had to play a second solo (neither are on the CD, the first being on the video) after May had technical problems before playing "Last Horizon". Also, "Back To The Light", "Tie Your Mother Down", "Love Token", "Headlong", "Let Your Heart Rule Your Head", "Resurrection" (in particular, Cozy Powell's drum solo), "We Will Rock You" and "Hammer to Fall" are all slightly shortened on the CD, but appear in full on the 90-minute video of the same event. The spoken part after "Love Token" has been cut because it contained too many profanities, but it can be heard fully on the unofficial audience recording.

Another World is the second full studio album delivered by Queen guitarist, Brian May. Recorded at his home studio after the completion of the last Queen album, Made in Heaven. Brian has emerged from Freddie Mercury's huge shadow to become a solo artist in his own right.
This was Cozy Powell's last album with Brian, Cozy Powell died before the album was completed. Brian May decided to use samples of his unused recordings in order to complete it, as opposed to using an alternative drummer.

1989 - Gary Moore - After The War

The last album of the era for Gary, and the last of a kind for Gary as well. Moore's 1989 release features a much welcomed return to the metal guitar stylings of his earlier albums. Cuts like "Speak for Yourself" and "Running From The Storm" are certainly up to the standards set on "Cooridors of Power" and "Victims of the Night." However, there are some hints of what was to come as well with the bluesy "The Messiah Will Come Again," which heralds Moore's new birth as a blues guitarist. Ozzy Osbourne makes a guest appearance on lead vocals in the tongue and cheek track "Led Clones" which takes a pot shot at bands like Kingdom Come and Great White, who while having platinum albums at thetime, were obviously borrowing their entire sound and image from Led Zeppelin. Ozzy also does some background vocals on "Speak for Yourself." Gary once again pays tribute to his childhood friend and musical brother, Philip Lynott in the emotional song "Blood of Emeralds". Overall, this album is so far superior to the pop leanings of his last album "Wild Frontiers" it's literally like comparing apples and onions. Once tastes sweet, the other just stinks.

Black Sabbath was still the band we all know and love. This album showed that they could fight to maintain a powerful position in the metal world. Tony Martin really takes the cake here because he outdoes everyone and proves he is just as good as Dio and Ozzy.If you're going to be an ass about who sings on this album, then you're an arrogant prick and you have no idea what you're missing. Headless Cross is without a doubt a classic.

It’s a strong album. Stronger than I remembered, especially Tony’s Martin’s voice. The live show must have been great because Iommi and Powell are always top-notch and I believe Martin to be at his vocal peak of his career. The guitar is always the highlight on a Sabbath album but Martin truly shines, which is one of the reason’s why a reunion of the HEAVEN & HELL lineup (with Dio) shouldn’t have happened following this album/tour.

1995 - Black Sabbath - Forbidden

If this is to be the last studio album from Sabbath, then it is certainly a disappointment. Tony Martin has called the album "total crap," and Geoff Nichols has said that "the album was recorded in ten days and it shows." So even the band members aren't behind this release, and it seems the album was recorded just to fulfill contractual obligations to IRS records.
Many Sabbath fans point to 1983’s BORN AGAIN (with Ian Gillan on vocals) as the most poorly produced Black Sabbath album due to it’s “muddy” mix. Those fans can now turn to FORBIDDEN for that title.

Many reviews are overly critical but do have good points. When I first heard this I was put off by the orchestra but the more I listen the more the orchestra adds. The rhythm sections are excellent as are the guitarists and vocalists. I definitely would have enjoyed more cuts without the orchestra but again the added strings and brass are an extra sonic adventure. Before Jimi Hendrix perished, he said that his dream was to be able to see other cats jamming to his music and his goal in the seventies was to be a formal student of music theory and to jam with a live orchestra.
A tribute. It's not meant to improve or compete with Hendrix...that would be impossible.

Ashton & Lord are remarkably restrained in the use of keyboards. Instead, the emphasis is on the brass arrangements, as in the offbeat urban sound of "Downside Upside Down," and soulful backing vocals, which are used to fine effect in "Silly Boy." The album ends on a surprisingly dark note, though, with the tale of a seemingly kind-hearted man driven to murder in the "Ballad of Mr. Giver."

This album should be approached without any preconceptions of what to expect. On that basis, we find a mixed bag containing some fine keyboards pieces and melodic songs but also bearing some at best ordinary tracks, especially on side one. Those who approach seeking either the hard rock of Deep Purple or the group and orchestra adventures of Lord's previous albums are certainly in for a shock! Only recommended for fans and followers of the Lord.

Cozy Powell with Glenn Tipton & John Entwistle

1997 - Tipton, Entwistle, Powell - Edge of the World



Glenn Tipton's first solo recordings are finally seeing the light of day. While the guitarist released his first solo album in 1996 he mentions in his liner notes that he had earlier recordings that featured legendary players John Entwistle and Cozy Powell. The record company decided this music's fate and as a result a different solo record Baptizm Of Fire would be released. Fast forward a few years and now courtesy of Rhino Records fans of the axe slinger will finally get to hear the music he wanted to present in the first place. Overall this is a solid Hard Rock album with nothing too over the top by the rhythm section except their expected level of skill and professional sound. It's my guess that they took this as a studio project more than a band and that's why they merely did what was necessary and not filled this with wild displays. Let's face it, the music listener world would have to agree with you on Entwistle having the title as one of the greatest Rock bassists ever. The same can be said for Cozy Powell who was one of Rocks more accomplished drummers and with recordings withJeff Beck, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and Whitesnake under his belt who can question. These two forces combined with Glenn's guitar work and vocals gave a sound that that was different enough from his work in Judas Priest to be easily enjoyed for it would still Rock. Touring was debated but would never come to pass as Fate's ever cruel hand ended any plans of this by taking both Powell and Entwistle from us far too soon. As a result instead of looking forward to shows with this music we can find this a fitting memorial of their great contributions to music.

There are a number of great songs on the album and each flows very well into the others on the recording. Some of my favorites were "Unknown Soldier", "The Holy Man" and "Edge Of The World". Its more Hard Rock than Metal which is a refreshing change for one would probably not be served well by releasing "Priest II", as this at least shows us the level of player that Tipton is. His guitar work is smooth and technical at the same time and I think anyone who enjoys his work in The Priest will find some stuff on here that rocks well enough for them. The booklet includes lyrics and some commentary from Glenn but there are no pictures to view which was sad. Even stuff from session would have been nice with these guys passed on I felt. Yet I'm glad Glenn was able to showcase the music that the two legends took part in just the same. They will never be forgotten and they can never be replaced.

Michael George "Chick" Churchill is a classically-trained pianist best-known as on/off keyboard man with Ten Years After, possibly the archetypal British blues/rock band, featuring Alvin Lee's lightning-fast guitar work. You & Me is Churchill's only solo album, to my knowledge, and is pretty typical of its era, consisting of lightweight singer-songwriter fare with added keyboards, or middle-of-the-road rock with no outstanding features, as dated as 'I'm with stupid' T-shirts and maroon and black stack heel shoes. Scream is the second solo album of Tony Martin. Released on November 8, 2005, Martin even produced the album himself. The song "Raising Hell" features the drumming of legendary drummer Cozy Powell based on a rejected song keyboard player Geoff Nicholls wrote for their Black Sabbath days. On most songs, Tony's son Joe Harford plays guitar. Nearly all other instruments are played by Tony himself (including a violin solo on "Scream").
Scream certainly is a very worthwhile album. It might not be the best melodic Rock CD we have heard this year, but it is good to hear that Tony Martin is still around. Fans of classic Hard Rock could do far worse than to give this one a listen. Not groundbreaking but a very solid effort altogether.

A pretty wild mix of airy acoustic folk and some surprisingly rockish touches from Julie Felix. the 1972 album Clotho's Web recorded with producer Mickie Most for RAK Records which mixes some rockish elements of electric bass and heavy drums in spots, without taking away the acoustic folk revivalist touches. Julie's voice is versatile, and conveys moods masterfully, and the sound is a pretty sweet mix of pop and rock ready moods with more traditional elements.

Murray Head - Nigel Lived (1973)



Released in 1972, 'Nigel Lived' is Murray Head's first solo LP. It's a concept album, using pages of a diary as the basis of the songs. The album artwork even included pages of the fictitious diary, along with the lyrics. The story is the journey of an actor who leaves his small hometown and comes to the big city to find fame and fortune, and the two different sides of the album describe first his success and then failure as his life falls apart.
The line up consists of some outstanding musicians including Cozy Powell (Rainbow;Emmerson Lake & Powell), Michael Giles (King Crimson) Peter Giles (King Crimson) and Jimmy Hastings (Caravan).

Murray Head: This was my first solo record. I was obsessed with recording natural sounds and wanted to do a film in sound. As the idea developed I found it veering naturally toward an autobiography. I also felt the need to separate the subjective from the objective. I decided on the concept of a songwriter who finds a diary and writes songs around various lines and phrases he chooses from it - so dealing with the inside and the outside of my head at the same time.
